Different types of video interviews

Did you know that RecRight provides three different ways to do a recorded video interview? Most of you are likely familiar with the so called traditional video interview or as you probably know it, video interview, where candidates have been selected before-hand and video questions are pre-recorded. But did you know, that there are other options too?

Public video interview and embedded video interview are not so well-known, but are becoming more popular by the day. Next I will briefly explain you the difference between these three concepts and when they are typically used:

Video Interview

You have received candidates’ applications probably either through email or an Applicant Tracking System. Your next step is to screen the candidates and decide who you are going to invite to the next round. Here is where the traditional video interview comes into play. You can now pick, let’s say, one third of the candidates and invite them to a video interview. So process-wise traditional video interview follows the initial screening of the candidates. The next step from here is to pick the best candidates to a personal interview.

Traditional video interviews are the most common recorded video interview type. Most video interview providers provide such option. It’s a perfect option for your everyday recruiting and becomes a time saver when you have more than ten candidates per position. There is no limit for the maximum number of candidates, but a good practice with larger candidate pools is to interview about one third of your applicants using recorded video interviews. With smaller candidate pools you should consider including everyone.

Here is a typical candidate view

Typical use:

  • Your everyday recruiting
  • When you have more than 10 applicants
  • When you are new with recorded video interview

Public Video Interview

Public video interview is open for everyone and it can replace a job ad. Via public interview all interested candidates can apply for the job. Here is how it works:

  1. Create a public video interview.
  2. Publish the public video interview link (on career page, social media, career portal, etc.).
  3. Introduce the position in the first video that doesn't require an answer from the candidate.
  4. Candidates submit their video answers and attachments, if you require.
  5. Pick the suitable candidates for the personal interview.

When should you use public video interview? Whenever. In practice it’s most commonly used in large recruiting campaigns, especially when recruiting millennials, but of course this doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be used elsewhere!

Public video interview is a perfect option if you are active in social media, since you already have a vast base of possible candidates. It’s also a great way to appear as a modern recruiter in the first stage of the recruiting process. If you want more tips on employer branding, click here.

Public interview will appear to the candidates like this. After filling the details and clicking "Start interview", "Record your response" buttons will appear

Typical use:

  • Large recruiting campaigns
  • When social media is part of your recruiting process
  • Recruiting millenials
  • Graduate recruitment

Embedded Video Interview

Embedded video interview is what it sounds like; a video interview that is embedded to another page, for example the job ad. In embedded video interview you create only one video question. Anyone can apply through embedded video interview, so in this sense it's similar to public video interview. Via embedded video interview candidates can leave one video answer, their email address and an optional LinkedIn link. Embedded video interview is a perfect option when your recruiting needs are lighter.

Both Public video interview and Embedded video interview can be launched from the Publishing Settings

How does it work in practice?

You can for example embed the video question on your application form, so with the written application and attachments you will also receive a short video introduction of the candidate. Embedded video interview can also be integrated on the application form in selected Applicant Tracking Systems (Saima, Laura). Another way to benefit from embedded video interview is to use it as an open application.

You can embed the video interview almost anywhere!

Typical use:

  • Open application
  • When you want a short candidate introduction video next to the application
  • Integrated to the application form through your Applicant Tracking System

What’s common between these different video interviews?

Although there are some differences between these three types, there are also many similarities:

  • You can ask the questions either using video or text
  • You are able to see the persona behind a written application
  • Screening process is the same in each type
  • You can have as many colleagues or customers participating as you like
  • All candidates have unlimited number of re-tries
  • Can be integrated to selected Applicant Tracking Systems

With traditional video interview and public video interview you can also require the candidates to include attachments to their video interview (such as CV, cover letter, etc.).
